Abstract

As smallsat constellations transition from experimental deployments to operational infrastructure, network scalability, resilience, and secure data transport have become primary system-level constraints. RF-based crosslinks increasingly face spectrum congestion, limited throughput, and architectural complexity when applied at constellation scale. Optical inter-satellite links (OISLs) offer a compelling alternative, but successful deployment requires careful integration across spacecraft design, network architecture, manufacturing, and operations.

This paper presents applied results and architectural lessons learned from the development and deployment of optical terminals for constellation-class missions. It examines system tradeoffs including terminal sizing and power budgets, acquisition and tracking performance in dynamic networks, interoperability considerations, and manufacturing scalability for high-volume programs. Hybrid RF/optical network architectures are evaluated to balance availability, latency, resilience, and regulatory constraints.

The paper further discusses how optical mesh connectivity enables distributed routing, reduced ground dependency, and improved fault tolerance, supporting resilient mission operations across multi-plane constellations. Operational considerations such as link scheduling, network management, and integration with onboard processing and autonomy frameworks are addressed, highlighting practical implementation challenges and mitigation strategies.

By grounding the discussion in real engineering data and deployment experience, this work provides actionable insight for system architects and operators evaluating optical networking as part of next-generation smallsat constellations. The results demonstrate how optical crosslinks move beyond point-to-point connectivity toward scalable space-based data transport architectures that support commercial, civil, and defense missions.
