Abstract

The growth of mission-critical data in autonomous systems, AI clusters, and space exploration creates a fundamental crisis: modern applications are crippled by tail latency—the rare, slow storage operation (often <0.1%) that bottlenecks distributed systems. Standard NAND flash suffers from inconsistent latencies, unpredictable Garbage Collection (GC) pauses, and read/write interference. While Storage Class Memory (SCM) approximates DRAM performance, its high cost precludes its use as bulk storage.

Asine’s breakthrough is a full-stack, predictive architecture that fuses SCM and high-density NAND, orchestrated by dynamic, context-aware software.

Core Architectural Innovations

SCM Write-Back Cache: Fast, persistent SCM captures all random and small sequential writes, absorbing workload shocks and serving as the immediate front line of storage.

Heuristic Hotness Index (HHI): An AI-powered algorithm classifies data by access pattern and criticality, assigning "hot" datasets and metadata to SCM and ensuring archival data migrates to NAND.

Phase-Aware I/O Scheduler: Decouples user-level I/Os from background NAND management, separating time-critical requests from unpredictable flash housekeeping tasks.

Methodology and Results

The architecture is tested using synthetic trace-driven simulations (FIO, TPC-C) and real-world deployments (e.g., spacecraft health logging).

Quantifiable results demonstrate:

Tail Latency Collapsed: Reduction of 99.9th percentile write latencies by up to 85%, achieving near-DRAM-class response for bursty, random workloads.

Write Endurance Doubled: By coalescing random workloads in SCM, the Write Amplification Factor (WAF) is slashed up to 50%, doubling NAND service life and improving total energy per TB written.

Asine’s architecture delivers deterministic outcomes by countering storage unpredictability, providing architectural certainty for critical edge and cloud deployments.
