Major General Wolfgang Ohl is the Deputy Director-General for the Armed Forces at the German Federal Ministry of Defence. In this capacity he acts for the Director-General in his responsibility for all operations and missions of the Federal Armed Forces, for matters of defence intelligence, military policy, and standing operational tasks. Born on 6 October 1965, he joined the Bundeswehr in 1985. He completed a degree in Economics and Organisational Science at the Bundeswehr University in Hamburg and served, inter alia, as platoon leader in the Air Force, company commander in the Ministerial Guard Battalion and Military Aide to the Chief of the Air Force. In 2000 he graduated from the 43rd National General/Admiral Staff Officer Course (Air Force) at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College. In the following years he served as Air Division A1, in Staff Officer functions in the Policy Planning Staff of the Federal Ministry of Defence and as Battalion Commander in the Air Force Training Regiment. In 2008 he returned to the personnel domain: as J1 with Response Forces Operations Command in Ulm, later Section Chief in the Personnel Office, and Branch Chief in the Directorate-General for Personnel in the Federal Ministry of Defence. From 2014 to 2017 he served as Branch Chief of the Information Centre for Security and Defence Policy, later Executive Group Information Centre, followed by an assignment as Division Chief in the Directorate-General for Security and Defence Policy, in the Federal Ministry of Defence in Berlin. In 2019 he took over as Chief of Staff, German Air Force Headquarters in Berlin. Following his assignment in the Air Force, he was appointed Deputy Director-General for Military Strategy and Operations in the Federal Ministry of Defence. In 2025, he assumed his current position as Deputy Director-General for the Armed Forces in the Federal Ministry of Defence. Major General Ohl is married with two children. In his free time, he enjoys sporting activities, in particular cycling.
