Space Institute – Te Pūnaha Ātea was established in 2019 as a multidisciplinary centre of expertise in space science and engineering, with the capability to design, execute, and operate space missions. Our mission is to create, disseminate, and apply knowledge that supports the growth of the New Zealand space sector.
We conduct applied research across space science and engineering while delivering educational activities that train the next generation of scientists and engineers. Our work spans the full innovation pipeline, from original concepts and modelling through to proof-of-concept development and in-orbit demonstrations, translating research into practical engineering solutions.
Through strong strategic partnerships, we have direct access to space, enabling in-orbit technology demonstrations and the development of a multifunctional mission control capability to operate satellites and payloads. This seamless end-to-end capability, combined with close industry engagement, provides our students with exceptional, industry-relevant learning experiences and strong pathways into the global aerospace sector.
